It’s just the right amount to make the book a perfect balance of romance, suspense and mystery, as well as horror. The love stories that are woven in are also sweet, but not too sweet. The beginning is a little dry and hard to get into, but passing the beginning, the rest is smooth that you can’t put the book down! It’s set it the 1910’s, which also gives it that whole new perspective. It has this whole scary vibe, and you can’t help what will happen next. The novel is filled with creepy things that make you keep reading. While she’s there a murder happens and it’s up to her and her friend Jericho, who is gifted as she is, to solve it. I know they may look frightening because of their size, but they are so worth it! Today marks the start of week 7 working at home… in which I find this is starting to feel really normal! Today I’m going to be reviewing Libba Bray’s series The Diviners.Īs I mention in my reviews, these novels are quiet thick, therefore that means there is a lot of plot to cover, and I just really summed up the major ones. Overall, however, I think that The Diviners is a moderately well-written, kind of "filler" read (in that I would only read it when I had nothing else to), with in-depth research and a plot which I do have to give the author credit for. Although it does pick up pace, and the storyline is quite engaging in the second part, I wasn't so enthusiastic about completing the story as I am with some books. Anyhow, this was my third attempt to finish the book.
I'm not sure whether this was the impersonal prose, the unlikable character of Evie, or the fact that I simply couldn't imagine the settings using the given descriptions. I loved the mix of mystery, magic and horror in this book, and it was intelligent and rich in its variety and balance.ĭespite its generally good points, I failed to be hooked by the book. The overall storyline was amazingly researched and very in-depth, chilling and disturbing simultaneously.
Every character was vivid and different, and I also really liked the sub-plots within their lives. I found the plot and characters of this book extremely well-written and cleverly thought out.
